ASSESSING PREVALENCE AND DETERMINANTS OF HEPATITIS B INFECTION AMONG THE YOUTH IN OFFINSO NORTH DISTRICT
Abstract:

Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. Three-quarters of the world population lives in areas where the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B is 2% or more just like Offinso District. Yet, research explorations of hepatitis B risk factors are scarce. The study assessed the prevalence and determinants of hepatitis b infection among the youth in Offinso North District Akumadan. A facility-based cross-sectional study design was used with purposive and simple random sampling to select 172 participants for the study. The hepatitis B report of the participants was reviewed. The selected participants were then contacted at the facility and a researcher administered questionnaire used to investigate them on hepatitis B knowledge, risk factors and perceived preventive measures. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23 and the findings showed low prevalence rate of 4% of HBV infection as compared to the estimated national prevalence rates of 12%. Though the study setting has 88.8% of its coverage classified as rural, respondents demonstrated good knowledge and awareness about hepatitis B. But some could not identify what hepatitis B virus is all about. It was concluded that, basic knowledge about hepatitis B is available among respondents but much is required about their knowledge regarding the causal factors. The Ghana Health Service and the Offinso North District Health Directorate should continue to provide adequate health information on the clinical state and risk factors, using approaches like the local radio stations and community centers in local languages.
